Bossa Care Tips
Your new treasure has already lived a life, and with a little love and care, it can live many more! Vintage luxury pieces deserve some extra attention, so we've put together a few tips to help you keep your Bossa finds looking fabulous for years to come.
THE GOLDEN RULES:
Before we get into the details, here are a few things every vintage lover should know:
-
Keep it cool and dry. Store your pieces away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat, which can cause fading, discoloration, cracking, and deterioration.
-
Give them room to breathe. Avoid airtight plastic bags and damp storage spaces. Your dust bag is your best friend!
-
Be gentle. Vintage materials can be more delicate than newer ones. Avoid harsh cleaning products, alcohol, perfumes, and unnecessary rubbing.
HANDLE YOUR BAGS WITH LOVE:
Leather bags
-
When you're not using your bag, gently stuff it with acid-free tissue paper or soft, clean fabric to help maintain its shape. Store it upright inside its dust bag, without crushing it under other items.
-
Avoid hanging your bag by its handles for long periods, as the weight can stretch or deform them.
-
Keep leather away from water, direct sunlight, and excessive heat.
-
Gently remove surface dust with a soft, dry cloth. Leather conditioners should only be used when appropriate for the specific leather and finish. When in doubt, leave it to a professional.
-
Watch out for color transfer! Dark denim and heavily dyed fabrics can leave marks on lighter-colored leather.
Canvas & fabric bags
-
Avoid overloading your bag, as excessive weight can stretch the fabric, strain stitching, and affect its shape.
-
For everyday care, gently remove dust with a clean, soft cloth or a suitable soft brush.
-
Avoid soaking or machine-washing your bag. Coated canvas, uncoated canvas, silk, velvet, and other delicate fabrics all require different cleaning methods.
-
Be extra careful with liquids, makeup, and pens. A small pouch inside your bag can save you from an unfortunate surprise!
-
If your bag gets wet, gently blot away excess moisture with tissue paper and let it dry naturally, away from direct heat.
Patent leather bags
-
Keep patent leather away from dark fabrics, printed materials, and other bags during storage. Color transfer can be extremely difficult, or even impossible, to remove.
-
Gently wipe fingerprints and surface dust with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and harsh cleaning products.
-
Store patent leather pieces separately, preferably inside a clean, breathable dust bag.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight, which can affect the glossy finish.
-
Never apply regular leather conditioner unless the product is specifically suitable for patent leather.
SHOES: GOOD SHOES DESERVE A LONG WALK:
-
After wearing your shoes, gently remove dirt from the soles with a soft cloth or suitable wipe, taking care not to soak leather soles or delicate finishes.
-
Allow shoes to air out and dry completely before storing them. Never use a hairdryer or direct heat.
-
Use tissue paper or appropriately sized shoe trees to help preserve their shape, especially if you won't be wearing them for a while.
-
Keep your shoes inside their dust bags when not in use, preferably stored separately to prevent scratches and color transfer.
-
Avoid wearing delicate vintage shoes in heavy rain or on particularly rough surfaces.
-
Give your favorite pairs a little rest between wears. And if the soles or heels start showing significant wear, a good cobbler can work wonders!
SMALL LEATHER GOODS: LITTLE THINGS, BIG LOVE:
Wallets, cardholders, pouches, and other small treasures deserve just as much attention!
-
Keep sharp objects away! Keys, coins, and metal accessories can scratch leather, damage hardware, and leave permanent marks. Avoid keeping them loose in the same compartment as your wallet or cardholder.
-
Don't overstuff wallets or cardholders. Stretching the leather or forcing too many cards into a slot can permanently change their shape.
-
Be mindful of pens, makeup, hand sanitizer, and perfume, which can stain or damage leather and fabric.
-
Keep small leather goods away from prolonged sunlight, moisture, and excessive heat.
-
When cleaning, start with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol, and products not intended for the specific material.
-
If your wallet has a clasp, zipper, or snap closure, handle it gently and avoid forcing it when the item is overfilled.
